URGENTHow Does AI Tell Images Apart?· Missions 4-1 ~ 4-4
At sunrise, the lab crew races down the lab hallway. The Assistant yawns while dragging a blanket, the Professor runs laughing with one shoe missing, the Fruit Fly Researcher clings to the hem of the Professor’s lab coat, and the robot follows with a tower of coffee cups balanced on its head. MISSION RECEIVEDAM 05:47

5 a.m., and the mission has landed
“How does AI tell images apart?”

The moment people see a photo, they know whether it’s a cat or a dog. But what does a computer look at, and how does it decide? The order from HQ was short: Tell four pairs apart, and uncover the principle behind it. Starting with two fish and ending with chihuahuas and muffins, which confuse even people, you’ll solve four missions one by one together with the lab crew.

LOG 05:47 Situation in the Lab

This is the log from three minutes after the alarm went off.

[SYSTEM] An urgent order has arrived from HQ. Attached: five photos, one fish measurement sheet, and one question.
Professor
ProfessorWake up! We’ve got a mission! Shoes? Forget the shoes! There’s just one question: “How does AI tell images apart?” We’ll answer it in four parts, from the easy pair to the hard one!
Assistant
AssistantYaaawn… Professor, the sun isn’t even up yet… Wait, the attached photos have a chihuahua and a muffin? Even I mix those up. How is a computer supposed to tell them apart? …I’m bringing my blanket.
Fruit Fly Researcher
Fruit Fly ResearcherGot the Professor’s lab coat! Let’s set the order before we go. First the fish with just two numbers, then pixels, then stacking layers, and last, the chihuahua and the muffin.
Lab RobotFive cups of coffee ready. Each mission comes loaded with hands-on activities and two Colab code samples. Please be careful not to trip.

Question
How does AI tell images apart?
Task
Work from easy pairs to hard ones, telling four pairs apart to uncover the principle. Start with sorting by named variables (length, weight) and go all the way to finding features among thousands of unnamed pixels.
Report format
For each mission: hands-on activities, beginner-friendly explanations, check questions, and two Colab code samples that have actually been run
Recommended order
4-1 → 4-2 → 4-3 → 4-4. Each mission can also be done on its own

MISSION 4-1Tabular data★☆☆☆

Bream vs Smelt

Variables and Features: What’s the Difference?

Order Forty-nine fish brought in from the market have gotten mixed up. Sort the bream from the smelt using just two numbers: length and weight.

Gear Finding a one-line rule · perceptron · SVM · k-NN and standardization

MISSION 4-2Pixels★★☆☆

Cat vs Human

A Photo Is a Matrix of Numbers

Order A single photo has arrived as thousands of numbers from 0 to 255. Find clues in that pile of numbers to tell a cat from a human.

Gear Pixel magnifier · the pixel-distance trap · convolution filters · facial landmarks

MISSION 4-3CNN★★★☆

Cat vs Dog

Stack Layers, Change the Coordinates

Order Both have fur, eyes, and ears. These two animals can’t be split by a single plane, so stack layers to tell them apart.

Gear 3D classification boundary · CNN architecture · softmax · Attentive CutMix

MISSION 4-4Final mission★★★★

Chihuahua vs Muffin

Low-Level Features Get Fooled, High-Level Features Decide

Order A round brown blob with three dark dots. Even people mix up this pair. Find out why the model gets fooled.

Gear Dark-spot filter · resolution experiment · pixel rules vs patterns · the model’s limits

KIT Gear Included in Every Mission

▣ Hands-on activities

From a pixel magnifier and a filter lab to a classification boundary you can rotate in 3D and CutMix that pastes patches together, you’ll see for yourself how the numbers actually change.

▣ Two Colab code samples

Each mission has code you can copy, download, or open directly as a notebook. It uses only Colab’s preinstalled libraries and built-in data, and the actual output is included.

▣ Explanations and check questions

Every section has a beginner-friendly explanation, tooltips on terms with a dotted underline, and check questions with explanations for wrong answers.

▣ AI Prompts to Try

Prompts that use the code as a starting point for planning a hackathon, drafting a competition proposal, or designing experiments for a paper.

▣ Analogies

Analogies such as “a pattern stamp” and “electing a class representative,” along with notes on where each analogy breaks down.

▣ TIP for Educators

Plans for lecture, on-the-job training (OJT), and 1:1 tutoring formats, questions for each section, and five common misconceptions.

SIDE Side Mission

◆ Go deeper into the fish mission — You can follow machine learning with the bream and smelt data (decision trees, k-NN, regression, cross-validation, and more) in detail in “Easy Machine Learning with Fish Market Data”.
